For anyone who is excited about trying their hands at hydroponic gardening they would first need to decide the technique that they want to adopt. For those who are already into hydroponic gardening they would already know where to get the required supplies from. Hydroponic gardening is all about growing plants under artificial conditions and therefore requires special equipment like growing trays, nutrient solvent tanks, substrate, timers, pumps and air stones.
Hydroponic gardening is a relatively new technique for growing plants and there are very few who have ventured into adopting these techniques for commercial crops. There is a number of gardening supply stores that have the components either as kits or individually. Hydroponic supplies can be categorized as equipment and growing supplies. As there are a number of techniques for hydroponic gardening the kits are different. The only things that they have in common are the nutrient solvent reservoirs and the lighting systems.
Hydroponic gardening is a method of doing indoor gardening in which one can grow tomatoes to lettuce in any season. All plants require light and nutrients and these two ingredients have to be supplied in the right quantities so that the plants can grow and flourish.
It was in Denmark that hydroponic gardening was first started and was later taken up in other parts of the world. Now hydroponic supplies can be found anywhere in the world and if one is not able to locate a suitable supplier in their vicinity the Internet is a good way of locating a supplier close by.
If one is planning to take it up on a commercial scale then the requirements change entirely and one may have to get the equipment made to order. Also to run and manage hydroponic gardens or farms on a commercial scale requires much more then just getting together the base equipment. Running and managing such an installation may require computers to control the water supplies, lighting, etc.
Hydroponics equipment and grow supplies can be purchased from a single source or from different suppliers. It all depends on what one wants to plant and grow. Like there are varieties of strawberries that one could select from and a particular variety may not be available at the local hydroponic garden supply stores. Or one may be looking for coarse vermiculite and cannot get that.
As with the growing trays these are available in standard sizes and one has to organize what they are planning to grow on the available supplies. One need to know where is one going to grow the plants, what are the plants one is going to grow. The technique that will be used e.g. nft, ebb and flow, wick, aeroponics. Based on all these decisions the equipment will be purchased. This should not be too much of a hassle as a search on the Internet and some calls on toll free numbers to garden suppliers should be able to get one what one wants. As this not a seasonal phenomena and plants can be grown at any time therefore the supplies are available all years round.
Bulk discounts are also advertised from time to time by different suppliers and one could avail of them. There is nothing that would spoil if stored over time for example growing trays, pots, substrate, pumps, lights, etc so one could purchase them when they are available on discount. Do remember not to go for any transparent plastic tubing or for metal and wood containers as these could get infected or rot or rust. Using plastics and a good pump and timer is advised. If the plan is to start small and once one has learnt the ropes then expand then one should go with in-expensive equipment.
