Having a greenhouse and knowing which plants one needs to keep in the greenhouse does not guarantee that the plants will survive the winter months. One also needs to stock up on the supplies that are required to keep the plants healthy and blooming during the winter.
Greenhouse supplies can range from insects that help plant growth to artificial lighting and heating equipment. There are online stores that one can order from or one can go down to their garden goods suppliers and order from them. What is required is a list of what to get and in what quantity and when. Proper soil, regular watering and a controlled atmosphere are the pre-requisites of maintaining and growing plants in the winter season.
During winters seedling planting also takes place so one has to be prepared to do this. First one needs to know the type of environment required for the seedlings to start growth. Seedlings requiring a very warm atmosphere to germinate will be indicated on the packet of the seedlings. These seedlings can be placed in a growing tray near a heat source like a water heater or oven. However in a greenhouse they may be covered with a sheet or given artificial heat to start them up. Once the seeds start germinating one may require doing two things. One is to move the plants to bigger pots and the other is reducing the temperature.
Soil, fertilizer, watering and maintaining the temperature of the greenhouse is required for the plants and the seedlings that are being grown. Of course the soil and fertilizer type and mix depends on the plants that one is growing and would differ for different types of plants.
Griffin Greenhouse Supplies is one of the largest greenhouse suppliers in the US and one can order anything from greenhouses to seedlings from them. They have outlets all over the US and provide doorstep delivery. There are several other stores also that one can order from and those who are not into gardening or decide to take it up as a hobby would be pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information and supplies that are available online.
The soils and the types of fertilizers required for the plants vary depending on the plants requirement and the type of soil it is used to growing in. If one is planting with seedlings the soil requirements are stated on the packets one gets. If one has got some exotic plants or tropical plants they would have received sufficient instructions on how to care for them. Fertilizer is another requirement for healthy plant growth but a word of caution here, too much and too little fertilizer can kill a plant. Most fertilizers available today state the type of plants that they can be used for and the quantity to use and all the required instructions to administer them. Some plants require a humid atmosphere where as other require regular watering. If one has a mix of plants it would be advisable to divide the greenhouse into sections and place the plants in them.
One can easily assemble a greenhouse from a kit and they can range from a small portable to a fairly large commercial sized greenhouse. Shelves, racks, seedling trays, flower pots almost everything that is required to grow outdoor or indoor plants can be easily purchased online, through catalogs, or on the phone or going down to the local garden supplier.
Pests have a way of also finding their way into places where plants are grown. There are several insecticides and other chemical supplies that one can use to get rid of these pests. However care has to be rendered that the chemicals one uses does not harm the plants and are also carefully stored out of harms way.
There are a number of greenhouse supply companies and greenhouse wholesale suppliers listed in the yellow pages and on the net. All one needs to know is their own requirements and right from a novice to an avid gardener or farmer can grow all the flowers and plants of their choice in greenhouses.
