Cupolas

As a cupola in most cases resembles a cup shaped structure that has been inverted and placed on the roof of a house or building. It is generally an open air structure and allows natural light to enter the building and in some buildings was used also as a lookout point. The cupola could be either dome shaped or quadrilateral but this is not a rule. Putting a cupola on the roof of a house does change the character of a house and of course if the cupola has a weathervane on it then it becomes a talking point and something of interest for a passerby to look at.

If one wants to put up a cupola on the roof of the house then one can either order one or design and build one themselves. The shape of the roof and where one wants to place the cupola will play a major role to the outcome. A cupola on a flat roof would do nothing for the house as the cupola would not blend in with the house. On a sloping or arched roof the cupola would add character to the house. Cupola kits are available and one has a choice of the material one wants to get it in. They come in wooden, iron, plastic and aluminum. If one wants to have a roof opening and a cupola on it and not just as a roof opening then of course one would need to get a constructor to help out. A cupola can be very useful if one wants to light up and use an attic. The cupola would allow light to filter into the attic and would also draw out the hot air from inside the house with screens the cupola would not let mosquitoes etc enter the house. So a cupola need not be a decorative structure on the roof but a useful addition to the house.

Cupolas with weathervanes are also available or one can get the weathervane separate and fix it on the cupola. If one wants to build their own cupola they can do this by ordering a kit or free plans and building one or designing and constructing their own. The cupola may be made from wood and have windows in it or it can be wide enough to have a spiral stairway as well. On the exterior of the cupola one could mount a clock and a cupola with a clock and a weathervane would really give character to any roof. It could also have a flag pole on it. The roof of the cupola would either be dome shaped or angled and the shape of the roof of the cupola would have to harmonize with the shape of the main roof of the house or the building on which it is constructed. The interior and the exterior of the cupola could be hand crafted and have some really exquisite designs on it. The handicraft would really depend on whether it would be visible from the ground. A spiral staircase could lead up to the cupola and it could be big enough that a person could actually stand in it. There are Woodworking plans cupolas that one can get of the Internet and one can also get cupola pictures that one can try and copy.

Cupolas could be open or have windows in them and could be made either wooden or metal. Selecting the right cupola to put or construct on the roof would really be a choice that would have to be made by the owner. Cupola plans and kits are available and one could easily order and get one. Some companies would also go to the extent of constructing or assembling it. If the cupola is going to be a major structure then it would be advisable to get a construction company to construct it. It is really the style of the roof that will set the theme for the cupola that will go it.
