Composters

Composting is a way of using or rather recycling what one would normally throw in the waste. Vegetables, fruit skins, cut grass, leaves and other wastes which are biodegradable are mixed together and left in the right environment to form a fertilizer rich soil that can be spread in the flower beds or the vegetable patch.

A composter can be a simple brick enclosure into which one keeps throwing all the waste which is kept covered or one can get a proper composting container. A proper composting container has an opening like a small door at the bottom of the container. As the rich composite settles at the bottom of the composter it is easier to remove and use.

Whether one constructs a brick enclosure or gets a ready made composter the first care should be to place or construct it in such a place that is not humid or where rain water can accumulate. Ideally it should be built or placed on a level surface. All wastes like tea leaves, fruit and vegetable skins, cut grass, dry leaves and even egg cartons and other cardboard containers can be dumped in the composter. Don’t just dump the garbage can into the composter as this could contain a lot to things that are not recyclable like empty cans, bottles and plastic containers. These items should not be put in the composter and care should be taken at what one throws in the composter.

Most modern day composters are made from hard, durable recycled plastic. They have a tight sealed cover on top and a sliding door at the bottom. As composting is an on going process one has to take the composite soil that accumulates at the bottom of the composter. If the composter is mounted on a trolley or has wheels there may be a trap door at the bottom of the composter for the ready composite soil to be taken out.

Composites are used to fertilize the gardens and garden waste is also recycled in the composters. Garden composters come in many varieties. A composter could be a simple bin with a lid or a specifically designed composter which may have a large lid for putting in garden waste and a smaller trap door for daily kitchen waste. It would also have vents for air circulation and could be termed as a gourmet garden composter.

The composite needs to be mixed together to maintain an even blend and one could use a pitch fork or a shovel to do this. For some this can be a tedious task and for others a form of exercise. Another type of composter is the rotating composter. This resembles a barrel mounted sideways on a stand with bearings and a handle so that the barrel can be rotated. Again rotating a 50 gallon barrel is not the easiest of tasks. So with some clever gear mechanism and appropriate doors an easy to use and practical composter is made. The barrel composter makes the job of rotating the composite easier and a door at the bottom side of the barrel allows one to drain out the composite.

Like all other garden appliances making and marketing composters has also become a big industry. The green revolution has made a lot of people realize that recycling waste also helps in recycling what would otherwise be wasted. An avid gardener may also ask his neighbors not to throw the wastes that can go into the composter and will make it a duty to come and collect the waste and scraps and put them in the composter. Summer gardens composters are also very useful in the colder regions as full use is made during the summer months for recycling and making composite. No matter that what is the function of garden machine composter scepter. Using composite soil in the flower and vegetable beds does eliminate the usage of chemical based fertilizers and the flowers and vegetables are more nutritious and healthy.
